Small- to Mid-Size Businesses Using Internet More to Find Out about IT

A recent IDC survey indicates that more and more small- to mid-size businesses (SMBs) are using the internet to discover new information technology products and solutions, but word of mouth still remains king, reports eWeek.  The US-based survey included responses from 603 small businesses and 400 medium businesses.

While word-of-mouth was the primary means by which SMBs learned about IT products, technologies, and suppliers, the internet—primarily vendor sites—is emerging as a key source of more information when SMBs research the IT products that might be right for their needs.  Communications firms cite the highest average number of sources consulted, while financial industry firms cited the lowest average.

However, not all IT vendor sites are up to par.  According to Merle Sandler, IDC’s research manager for SMB programs, many sites need to do better in offering SMBs a better user experience.  “Some web sites you really have to scratch around before you find anything,” said Sandler, as quoted by eWeek.
